Cartagena
The ancient port of Cartagena is the second most important city in the region and the centre of the Mediterranean Maritime Department.  It predates the Roman period and boasts the ruins of a Roman theatre, archaeological museums plus a number of interesting examples of military and modernist exhibits and architecture.  As well as the chic shopping and tapas bars in Calle Mayor Cartagena is a large city with shopping and commerce spread across it.  Places of interest include the Church of Santa Maria La Vieja, the Torre Ciega, Torres Park and the Castle de la Concepcion.  One of the prettiest areas in the city is its port where you can find the Modernist Town Hall and several monuments - including one dedicated to the Heroes of Cavite and Santiago de Cuba, and the work of Isaac Pearl in 1888 dedicated to the first submarine in the world ever to be launched.  Before leaving Cartagena make sure you also visit the Archaeological Museums.

Cabo de Palos
This is a typical Murcian village with less than 1000 inhabitants.  Smaller than its neighbours, La Manga and Cartagena.  Cabo de Palos is a sleepy coastal village, it's history is one of a fishing community and is still relatively reliant on the sea today with most resident families having connections with the industry; seafood here is top class.
As an established community, there is a good selection of shops, restaurants already in place.  These are local village shops, those looking for more variety will find them in La Manga or Cartagena.
The town still remains unspoiled by tourism even though there is increased interest, having retained much of its inherent culture and atmosphere. There are many fiestas (festivals) throughout the Cabo de Palos calendar, some of which are a real spectacle and well worth a look.  The cuisine is a major bonus with affordable good food available in the town's restaurants and tapas bars.
